.hu is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Hungary . It was introduced on November 7, 1990 and is operated by the Association of Hungarian Internet Service Providers ( Council of Hungarian Internet Providers , or CHIP for short).

history

Initially, only citizens and companies based in the country could register a .hu domain. Foreign interested parties were only admitted if they had their permanent residence in Hungary or if a trademark was registered there. In March 2005, the registry liberalized its criteria: Since then, any natural or legal person from the European Union has been allowed to register a .hu domain.

Compared to other top-level domains , the registry published all registered .hu domains. She initially withheld the new registration for two weeks in order to enable an objection to the registration. In July 2011, the registry abolished this hurdle, although all newly registered .hu domains are only made public afterwards.

The top-level domain is one of the most popular addresses worldwide.

Directive

The award criteria stipulate that a .hu domain can be between two and 40 characters long. In addition to alphanumeric characters , all lower case letters of the Hungarian alphabet can be used. When registering, private individuals must provide their ID number , companies the VAT number. Interested parties outside the European Union have to prove that they have registered a trademark or patent in Hungary .
