.no is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Scandinavian state Norway . It has existed since March 17, 1987 and is managed by the company UNINETT Norid AS , which is also responsible for the unused ccTLDs .bv (Norwegian Biland Bouvetinsel ) and .sj (Norwegian-administered Svalbard and Norwegian Jan Mayen area ).

Award criteria

The registration of a .no domain is reserved exclusively for natural and legal persons residing or having a branch in Norway. It is one of the so-called restricted top-level domains and is therefore comparatively less widespread internationally than other domains.

In total, a .no domain can be between two and 63 characters long, whereby the use of special characters is supported. For example, the letters Ø and Æ (only in lower case ) can easily be used when registering an address. The connection of a .no domain is completely automated and is usually completed within 24 hours, even with foreign registrars.

It is basically possible to change the owner. From a technical point of view, however, the affected domain is deleted and re-registered, which means that fees are again incurred in full for the address and there is an increased risk of losing the domain during the conversion.

Registry

The strict criteria have repeatedly led to a dispute between Norid and providers of third-level domains. So who wanted Vergabestelle prevent, for example, must be ordered that .CO.NO domains in the world for everyone and registration of addresses .priv.no hired to take over the administration. Norid is also known for consistently deleting the addresses of dissolved companies from its database and making them available again to new interested parties.

A warning was also given against the use of .co.no domains. These have been offered since 2010 by the Amsterdam- based company CoDNS BV , which has no connection with Norid, but is assigned to the domain registrar EuroDNS . So far, the allocation of the corresponding .co.no domains has not been prevented.
