Trivia
- This was the first time since 1976, that the USA failed to make the semis.
- Both Miss Philippines and Miss Spain were not the original winners of their national pageants. Miriam Quiambao was originally to compete at the Miss World Pageant, but was bumped up to the Universe title after the original winner, Janelle Bautista was dethroned. Diana Noguera of Spain was unplaced in her national pageant, but replaced the original winner Lorena Bernal after the top 3 delegates refused the crown.
- Some of the favorites that year who failed to make the 10 were France, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and the Bahamas.
- The eventual winner, Mpule Kwelagobe, is the very first contestant ever from Botswana to compete at Miss Universe. She had previously participated in the Miss World pageant in 1997, where she was unplaced.
- Like Botswana, Ghana was also called out to the semi-finals for the first time.
- South Africa, Venezuela, India, and Puerto Rico were also called out to the semi-finals in 1998.
- As for the others in the Top 10, Jamaica was last called in 1991, Spain in 1993, the Philippines in 1994, and Mexico in 1996.
