Cumberland, officially known as Central Cumberland was one of the nine original teams in the first New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) season in 1908, albeit admitted after the first round of matches had already been played. They are the shortest lived team in the history of first-grade rugby league in Australia.

History

Formation

The club was formed on the night of April 21 1908 at Horse and Jockey Hotel, Homebush, the night after the the first round of rugby league was being held in the NSWRL premiership.[1] Of that morning, Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph has advertised a meeting for that night to discuss the formation of rugby league club in the Cumberland area.[2] The meeting was attended by annoyed members of the Western Suburbs Rugby Union Club who were asked to form a rugby league club under the name Central Cumberland. 23 of the 27 players present at the meeting signed with the club, most of which were rugby union players from the Western Suburbs Rugby Union Club.[2][1]

The NSWRL were unwilling to admit a ninth team into the premiership and tried to push Cumberland to merge with nearby team Western Suburbs.[1] However, no merger would happen so the NSWRL agreed to allowing the Cumberland team to a trial match against Eastern Suburbs. While Eastern Suburbs won the match 18-4, the NSWRL was convinced of Cumberland's feasibility as a possible club. As the NSWRL premiership had already begun, the NSWRL had to reformat the draw to include Cumberland, which meant increasing the number of teams from eight to nine. Cumberland did not have a home ground, like some of the other teams, and would play their games at Birchgrove Oval, Wentworth Park and the Agricultural Ground.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).

1908 season

Their solitary win for the season was against Wests. At the end of the season the club was absorbed by Wests, and hence remains the shortest lived NSWRL/ARL/SL/NRL club, playing a mere 8 games. In Cumberland's Last Game in rugby league on the 25th of July 1908, they could only field 11 of their players, and in order to make up the numbers, had to co-opt 2 of their opponents (North Sydney) officials to make up the numbers.
