Image source problem with Image:Knef Halt mich fest.JPG
Thanks for uploading :Image:Knef Halt mich fest.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:06, 11 October 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.<!-- Template:Di-no source-notice --> —Angr 18:06, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Revision as of 18:06, 11 October 2008

I really prefer an individually written note to a canned text in which someone thanks me for uploading an image which they actually want to delete or tells me that an image I uploaded years ago "has been orphaned" after they have removed it from the particular page themselves.

A few months later now, I realise that the above message encourages copyright-obsessed users to dump their unwanted messages on this talk page rather than deterring them from doing so. I'm truly sorry if amongst all that clutter I have missed a real message to me. <KF>, 18 May 2007

Fair use rationale for Image:Adair Style.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Adair Style.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Carl Ritter von Ghega money.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Carl Ritter von Ghega money.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Κaiba 18:38, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Rökk1939Heesters.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Rökk1939Heesters.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Inappropriate Edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to make constructive contributions to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to 2006 State of the Union address, did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Hi, are you joking sending me the following message?
Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to make constructive contributions to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to 2006 State of the Union address, did not appear to be constructive [to whom??] and has been reverted or removed [by whom??]. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.
Could you please be more precise?
Thanks in advance, and best wishes, <KF> 20:53, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
 • Added comment to KF's talk page. No, I was not kidding, clear example of an inappropriate edit. Tanthalas39 (talk) 21:00, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You asked on my talk page if I was joking by leaving you the above warning. No, I was not joking. Your addition of "Jay Bennish (U.S. high school teacher who suggested in one of his classes that Bush's tone was "eerily similar" to that of Adolf Hitler's speeches in that both were very ethnocentric)" is a clear violation of Wikipedia's policies of no original research and verifiability, and completely inappropriate to the policy and tone of Wikipedia. From the comments other users have left for you, it's pretty clear that you do not have a good understanding of Wiki policies. I would suggest reading up on the two I supplied. Tanthalas39 (talk) 20:59, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Clear violation of Wikipedia's policies of no original research and verifiability"? Calm down, and tag the Jay Bennish article. My edit was a copy and paste job from there, verbatim. How can you check on the appropriateness of several edits per minute? <KF> 21:04, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No reply then? Best wishes, <KF> 23:57, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see you are fishing for a reply on my talk page. All right, I'll bite. First of all, the comment I (automatically) left on your page was minimally inflamatory - "did not appear", welcome to Wiki", etc. I think it is interesting that you tell me to "calm down", yet you seem to be the one in the huff. In all reality, although I don't 100% agree with adding that information to the page, I have to apologize. You are correct - when I have reverted 500 vandal edits in a day, there is a chance that gray-area reversions like this one will happen. Also, I frankly DO appreciate the heads-up; it's always good to have a check-and-balance in the system. All in all, it's a good thing that Wiki is just as easily reverted back - perhaps next time, just change it back and put a friendly note on my page (as I initially did to yours). Orphaned non-free media (Image:T Bernhard.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:T Bernhard.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 19:31, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

January 2008

Hello. Please don't forget to provide an edit summary, which wasn't included with your recent edit to Childfree. Thank you. Slashme (talk) 06:53, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your reply on my talk page:

I see that you are actually quite scrupulous about using edit summaries, so if I had taken the time to check out your contributions I would probably not have bothered with the notice. Please don't take it personally; it was in any case just meant as a friendly reminder.

With that being said, an explanation is in order. You say that all you did was to change a bracket. That might be so, but I would also have known that without checking the diff if you had filled in the edit summary. Help:Edit summary says:

Always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline. Even a short summary is better than no summary.

All you would have had to do is type "bracket" in the edit summary box, which takes about a second, maybe two. Each user who has the page on his or her watchlist is then saved the time taken by clicking on the "diff" link or hovering on the link, waiting for popups to show the diff. So overall, it's quite a significant saving in time and bandwidth for the project. --Slashme (talk) 08:30, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image needs a rationale. Thanks, — Κaiba 00:17, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:ERingel.jpg

I have tagged Image:ERingel.jpg as no rationale, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. Categorization of Love Lies Bleeding (novel)

Hi, you have removed two categories from that article. First you called that action "recat", at a later point you called it "refined cat". Honestly, I don't understand any of this. Could you please explain?

All the best, <KF> 05:46, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In straightforward cases an article should not be in both a category and its subcategory, please see WP:SUBCAT. That is the reason for `refining' as Category:English novels (which is not a Category:English-language novels as many seem to think:) is a subcat of Category:British novels. Similarly, Category:Detective novels is a subcat of Category:Crime novels. As the article was moved from cat to a parent cat the move was classifiesd as 'recategorization'. Please refer to WP:SUBCAT, WP:CAT for editorial guidelines on categorizing articles.
BTW, if you plan to create pages for other Crispin novels, it's a good idea to create Category:Novels by Edmund Crispin (or let me know and I will do it) and properly categorize it while removing, at the same time, redundant cats from individual articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Henry Merrivale (talkcontribs) 22:01, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer. What I don't quite understand is why in one instance—British versus English novels—you moved the article from the "parent cat" to a more specific one while in the other—crime versus detective fiction—your move was in the opposite direction. As I see it, Gervase Fen is clearly a detective, and Love Lies Bleeding undoubtedly a detective novel. Best wishes, <KF> 22:51, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In straightforward cases an article should be places in the most specific category, so it was moved from Category:British novels to Category:English novels.
But, Category:Crime novels versus Category:Detective novels is not as straightforward (note that there also exists Category:Mystery novels). I retained the artical in the parent cat as to not impose any specific POV. While, as you point out, Gervase Fen is clearly a detective, novel is more than just a 'detective' novel, which is traditionally concerned with the formal 'detection' only. Also, the term detective novel is more or less superseded now by the term crime novel, at least in academic literature.Henry Merrivale (talk) 23:09, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Karlheinz&AlmazBöhm.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Krenn.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:Krenn.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Docg 21:58, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Destry.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Destry.jpg.

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:12, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Little old me?

Hi, having read your comment at Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2008_March_24#Daniel_Brandt_redirect I have been wondering whether you were referring to me. If so, I'd ask you to explain why pointing someone to an ongoing discussion (which, as far as Daniel Brandt is concerned, never happened) would be a no-no.

Considering Daniel Brandt, I don't care whether the article is a biography or a redirect (my statement at the deletion review may indeed be ambiguous in this respect), but having missed out on the whole controversy there is no way I've been able to figure out why anyone (anyone!) might object to a redirect (!). So is this damnatio memoriae really official Wikipedia policy?

Let me just explain how I came to add my "restore": It must have been some time ago that I added a link to Daniel Brandt to my User:KF/For future reference, which usually means that I happened across that article, found it interesting but had no time to read it thoroughly. When I was browsing through that page just a few hours ago I realised a red link where there should be none and started to investigate.

So what's all this about?

Best wishes, <KF> 23:40, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apparantly I was mistaken about the direction of where the canvassing was pointing and it wasn't to do with Daniel Brandt. Therefore my comment about your vote being canvassed was mistaken and I apologise for that. Pointing two editors who you know to have a fixed view of an admin towards a deletion discussion of one of that admin's deletion is clearly canvassing and is not acceptable. Its not your fault you were canvassed but it still shouldn't have happened. Spartaz Humbug! 16:37, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer. So whenever someone you do not even know tells you to do something you go and do it straight away without as much as thinking? As far as I'm concerned, that would truly be unacceptable, but as every individual is, and will continue to be, a free agent it seems to me there's at least some residual hope left. All the best, <KF> 16:53, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Jean_Ziegler.JPG

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Jean_Ziegler.JPG.

If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 10:21, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading Image:Terry St Clair 2008.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 10:32, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I cut out Image:Penguin_II.JPG from a catalogue issued by Penguin Books about 15 years ago, but I'm afraid I haven't got it any more. What looks like a light brown frame in the image is in fact a piece of cardboard onto which I glued the picture. I certainly didn't pay for the catalogue; either I took a free copy from a bookshop or it was sent to me through the post. I'm sorry I can't be of any help really, but why not ask Penguin Books? Book covers

Hello there. Remarking on a similarity between two book covers is original research - if there had been a documented spat about one publisher reusing the other's cover design then it would be be of encyclopaedic note, but as it stands it's just a single editor's personal observation. (One of the reasons this is a risky thing to include in an encyclopaedia is that there might be many books that use the hangman motif, and it'd be misleading to single out these particular two as being particularly significant.)

You're absolutely right that one man's remarkable fact is another man's trivia, and that's why we have policies like WP:OR to try to give an objective measure of it. I know it's not exhaustively applied and there's an awful lot of useless trivia on Wikipedia, but I try to trim it back on articles I happen to have on my watchlist, particularly edits which would create a new "appearances in popular culture" section, as your Hangman (game) edit did. --McGeddon (talk) 11:28, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Albers Wind Meer.jpg}

Thank you for uploading Image:Albers Wind Meer.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

 • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
 • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:R Towne.jpg.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:M Hoppe.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:M Hoppe.jpg.

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:08, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Calling all active WP:NOVELS members

WikiProject Novels Roll Call

WikiProject Novels is currently holding a roll call, which we hope to have annually. Your username is listed on the members list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active within the project. If you still consider yourself an active WP:Novels editor, please add your name back to the Active Members list. Also feel free to join any of our task forces and take a look at the project's Job Centre to get involved!

Next month we will begin the coordinator election selection process. We hope to have more involvement and input this time around! More news will be forthcoming. Thanks, everyone! María (habla conmigo) 17:52, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Task force news
Novel-related news
 • Devil May Care, written by Sebastian Faulks ("writing as Ian Fleming"), has become Penguin Books fastest selling hardcover fiction title. It is the latest installment in the book series about British secret agent James Bond and was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of late Bond creator Ian Fleming's birthday on May 28, 1908.
 • Me Cheeta: the Autobiography, written by a ghostwriter, is the autobiography of Cheeta the Chimp who is listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest recorded non-human primate at the age of 76. He has appeared in various movie roles which included twelve Tarzan movies and even battled addiction to alcohol and cigars. The book is not published until October 1, but judges for the 2008 Guardian First Book Award were sent a early version and were so impressed that they have included it on the 10-strong longlist.
 • Stephenie Meyer, who is listed by Time magazine as one of its 100 most influential people of 2008, has decided not to continue with writing her draft for Midnight Sun after 12 chapters of the unfinished manuscript were leaked on the internet.
Current debates
 • Categories for Discussion has a series of discussions about whether to categorize certain specific types of fictional characters: double agents, dictators, characters with eidetic memory, etc. Advice from any Novels project members would be valuable in assisting them.
 • WikiProject Media franchises aims to help editors with the coordination of articles within the thousands of media franchises which exist and has requested input from our members. They are currently discussing a naming convention for franchise articles. Since this may affect one or more articles in our Novel project, they would like to get opinions before implimenting any changes.
From the Members

With the Newsletter being almost three months overdue, I have decided to take on the position of Editor to make sure it reaches you regularly on time each month. The Newsletter is meant to inspire and encourage our team of Editors and so my goal shall be to make it informative and interesting each issue.

We now have many positions vacant in our Project Team, so we are looking for members who have the time and interest to take on the various roles, details of which can be found at the Job Centre. Shortly a Coordinator nominations notice shall also be sent out to all members, which will commence the annual Coordinator selection process.

Next month's Newsletter will include a message from our Coordinator Maria, who will introduce herself and speak on our forthcoming elections for extra Coordinators.

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:RAshtray.JPG

Thank you for uploading Image:RAshtray.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:48, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

 • Yllosubmarine (talk · contribs) has been a member of the Novels WikiProject for nearly two years, and a coordinator since May. Aside from her work outside the project (including four FAs and six GAs in various areas), she has been active in the Project's Assessment and Peer Review departments. She hopes to continue in these roles as well as help encourage more activity and community research within the Project. With the upcoming coordinator election, she hopes that others will volunteer to become more active in their roles as Project members so that we can continue to provide quality articles to the readers of this encyclopedia.

From the Outreach Department

On the advice of Coordinator Maria, the newsletter is now only distributed to active listed members of the Novels Project. A new section has started with this issue called 'In Focus', which will feature various members and task forces each month.

Members are requested to post any news items to the Tip Line (found above) to make sure it reaches the next newsletter before closing date, which is always the last day of the preceding month. Any task force news should be added by the coordinator of that task force. Having news items helps inform members of what is happening at the various task forces and so can be a way of encouraging more membership and participation.

Editors are required to assist with the newsletter for Task Force News and Peer Reviews & Assessments News, which involves the gathering of news items from the main project and the various task forces. These positions may be applied for at the Job Centre.

Image source problem with Image:Knef Halt mich fest.JPG

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Knef Halt mich fest.JPG.

Thank you. —Angr 18:06, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
