Template:Current television series Template:Big Brother housemates Big Brother Australia 2007 is the seventh season of the Australian reality television series Big Brother Australia. Episodes are broadcast on Network Ten in Australia, and the first episode aired on April 22, 2007.

Auditions were held throughout November and December 2006, taking place in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin.

The 2007 launch had the smallest ever opening night audience in all seven Big Brother Australia series, and a 14% drop from last year's opening night. Network Ten came second overall but lost the night to Nine Network's 60 Minutes. With an average of 1.549 million viewers, the opening night was nevertheless Ten's best Sunday night of the year.[1]

Changes to the format

Big Brother 2007 introduced several new elements not seen in previous seasons of the series.

Big Brother Starburst Golden Key

On January 29 2007, Network Ten, Endemol Southern Star, and Masterfoods announced "Australia's biggest ever integrated television promotion", the Big Brother Starburst Golden Key, which would allow a member of the public to enter the Big Brother House as a housemate.[2]

Unique alphanumeric codes were included in packs of Starburst, a confectionery manufactured by Masterfoods. One hundred codes gave the opportunity to audition for the BB season after it began. Of these people, one would become a housemate and be eligible to win the season and all prizes. [2] The winner of this competition was selected during a special episode called "Golden Key". On Day 18, Nick Sady was the "Golden Key" winner and entered the Big Brother house.

Prize money

Big Brother originally informed the housemates that there was zero prize money. Later they were informed that they can earn prize money by completing various tasks. The prize money is currently at $130,000.[3]

Friday Night Live winner's twist

This year the winner of Friday Night Live has a greater power in nominations. Replacing the Three Point Twist of previous seasons the Friday Night Live winner each week this season required to choose one nominated housemate to be removed from the nomination line-up, and to nominate another to replace them.

Storeroom

All staple foods provided to housemates this year are vegan. The housemates can supplement this with milk and eggs supplied from the farm yard and herbs and mushrooms from the herb garden.[4]

Telephone

Situated in the lounge of the Big Brother house is a telephone. This is the first time that a telephone has been put inside the Big Brother house in Australia. It was shown on the Opening Night broadcast before the housemates entered the house. It's purpose or use has not been established as yet.

Chill Out Room

Adjacent to the kitchen is a new room called the "Chill Out Room". This room allows no more than three housemates at a time. It provides a quiet place to talk or relax, away from the rest of the housemates. Entry is by a small door.

White Room

On 23 April, the four remaining wild-card housemates not selected to enter the House via the public vote on Days 1 and 2 were isolated in the "White Room".

The housemates put in isolation were Cruz, Demet, Kara, and Harrison. As the name suggests, the White Room is painted in white, contains white furniture, and the housemates have only white clothes to wear. In the centre of the room is a red button. At any time, a housemate may press the red button if they wish to leave. However, this decision is final and the quitting housemate may not return to the Big Brother House or the White Room. The housemate who stays inside the White Room the longest without pressing the red button will become a genuine Big Brother housemate and enter the main house with the rest of the housemates.

On all the monitors in the Big Brother House, the housemates can now watch the White Room housemates 24/7, but cannot hear any audio. The White Room housemates are also unaware that they are being watched by the Big Brother housemates.

It was revealed on Day 4 that the White Room housemates are provided with a white porridge for their nutritional needs keeping within the white room theme.[5]

Cruz was the first white room resident evicted when Big Brother offered $750AUD if someone pushed the red button.

To determine who was going to be the new housemate, the three remaining white room contestants were faced with challenges. First, Kara was evicted when Harrison and Demet nominated her. Then, the housemates had to choose one, and picked Demet who became an official housemate until her eviction on day 29.

Secret Relationships

It was revealed on the Game On episode that a secret relationship between Hayley and Andrew exists and has been hidden from the other housemates. Big Brother set the task to both housemates to enter the house and keep secret their relationship for one week. If they succeed, then both of them can stay in the house; if they fail then one of them will be evicted. On the 29 April episode, Big Brother revealed the secret relationship of Hayley and Andrew and 3 housemates had guessed correctly regarding the relationship. Both housemates will stay in the house as a majority of the housemates had to guess correctly for one of them to be evicted. Big Brother also revealed that the housemates had completed the task successfully and awarded $50,000 into the prize pool.

Mr. X (Billy) who is a former partner of Hayley, has been brought into the Big Brother house to "stir" up the relationship of Hayley and Andrew to see if he can make them reveal their secret relationship to the housemates before the week's end. Each day he received a mission from Big Brother to put pressure on their relationship. It was revealed on the 29 April episode that Billy was Hayley's ex-boyfriend.

Billy's Tasks

  1. Day 2: Before Billy went to bed, he had to say "Goodnight Hayley, sweet dreams".
  2. Day 3: From the moment Hayley woke up, Billy had to "wait on her hand and foot" and become her best friend. He also had to pick a bunch of flowers from the garden and give them to Hayley, and ask her to help pick the herbs.
  3. Day 4: When Billy was asked to take a housemate with him to tend the animals, he had to choose Hayley.
  4. Day 5: Billy had to become Andrew's best friend.

Big Brother confirmed on Day 8 that Billy's mission was an overall success, and his reward was becoming a proper housemate on Day 16.

No housemates on Rove

Housemates this season have not be featured as guests on variety/talk show Rove. Previously housemates would appear on Rove in the days following their eviction. Rove is now aired on Sunday nights, at 8:30, immediately after the Big Brother eviction show, so it is impossible for the housemates to travel so quickly (as Rove is filmed in a different state) to appear on both shows. [6]

During the first week of the season fifteen housemates were added to the house. Twelve went into the house on opening night while viewers could vote in two extra housemates, one male and one female from a group of six. The following night, Susannah and Zoran entered the house along with an extra housemate, Billy (also known as Mr. X), who became a housemate to put Hayley and Andrew's secret relationship into jeopardy. A further two female housemates, Daniela and Laura, entered as intruders. The total number of housemates to enter the house is 19.

Aleisha

Aleisha Lee Cowcher[7] (born May_22, 1986) is a Hairdresser from Cobram, Victoria and grew up in the country with seven other siblings. She describes herself as hyperactive, energetic and modest. She claims that she often day-dreams about men.[8] Her father committed suicide and her sister died of cancer.[citation needed]

Andrew

Andrew is an MFB Firefighter from Victoria. Andrew cannot stand messy, lazy and irresponsible people. He describes himself as happy, confident and tidy.[9] He is currently in a relationship with Hayley which was being kept secret from the other housemates as a week one challenge set by Big Brother. Andrew was involved in a heated argument with Bodie stemming from Bodie's claims that Hayley was "playing the game".

Billy

Chris "Billy" Bentley[10] (born 1983) (also known, in publicity, as Mr. X prior to his entry into the house) is a former boyfriend of housemate Hayley. He was brought into the house to stir up the hidden relationship of Andrew and Hayley.[11] Billy states his occupation as being an Insurance Broker. He was traveling in Canada when approached by Big Brother producers to enter the house. Billy was not originally a legitimate housemate however was granted this position on Day 16 for the success of his task in challenging Andrew and Hayley's secret couple task.

He was not permitted to make contact with the rest of the housemates and was to be separated from them at all times. He was reinstated by Big Brother as a "housemate" before the end of Day 10. Bodie was evicted on Day 22, with 7% of the total vote.

On Day 11, Demet entered the house officially after she was voted in by the Big Brother housemates. Demet was seen as being hypocritical for supposedly lying during a heated argument involving herself, Hayley, Andrew, Emma, Nick, Zoran and (very briefly) Susannah on Day 22 (Eviction Night).[18] She was evicted by public vote on Day 29.

Emma's father died whilst she was in the Big Brother House and as of May 24, 2007 she has not been advised of his death.[23] Her father's dying wish was that Emma not be informed of his death until after she had left the Big Brother house. He had hoped that his death would not receive publicity, however news of his passing was leaked to the news media. Emma's brother Matt reported that their father had endured a long illness and the family had had some time to prepare themselves.[24] This news has been reported internationally. [25] [26] Psychologist Chris Hall, from the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement, criticised the decision to not inform Emma. He said she should be be told of her father's death to allow her make her own choice about how to deal with it. [27] With ratings down on previous seasons, the program's producers are worried that this situation could have a negative impact on the show's viewing figures.[28] The producers of the series have confirmed that, on her eviction from the house, they will advise Emma of her father's death in private and away from television cameras. [29] Emma has an English-born partner, Tim Stanton, also a personal trainer, and they had lived together in Sydney prior to Emma entering the Big Brother House.

Hayley

The revelation came after the housemates were assigned a task involving the care of artificial babies. That task was cancelled due to Kate's traumatic reaction to it. On Day 15, she was evicted from the house by public voting.

Nomination notes

Template:Fnb For passing their task, Hayley and Andrew are exempt from nominations. However, in future they must nominate as a couple but they can be nominated as individuals. Billy is also exempt as he is not an official housemate. Also, Emma won the Friday Night Live award of discussing nominations with Aleisha. Emma used her new Friday Night Live winner's twist to save herself from nomination, and to nominate Jamie.

Template:Fnb Because Demet was new to the house, she was exempt from nominations. Billy became an official "housemate" and nominated for the first time. Both Hayley and Andrew nominated together. In the nominations twist, Hayley used her status as winner of Friday Night Live to save Emma from nomination, and to nominate Joel. Four housemates were nominated instead of three, and this sunday's eviction is a double eviction.

Template:Fnb Because Nick was new to the house, he was exempt from nominations. Both Hayley and Andrew nominated together. In the nominations twist, Andrew used his status as winner of Friday Night Live to save Thomas from nomination, and to nominate Demet.

Template:Fnb Because Hayley was leaving the house the following night, she was exempt from nominations. Emma and Aleisha were both awarded a point by Big Brother for previously discussing nominations. Andrew nominated by himself for the first time. In the nominations twist, Demet, who was the previous night evicted, used her power as winner of Friday Night Live outside the house by writing down her choice of preferences for who to Save and Evict, and saved Emma from nomination, and nominated Andrew, even though he didn't have a single nomination point against him.

Special shows

Game On

"Game On" was a live show that was broadcast on Day 2 (2007-04-23). The results of the overnight wild-card SMS vote were revealed. Susannah and Zoran were the chosen two out of the six wild-card housemates. The remainder of the wild-card housemates were isolated in the White Room. The Daily Show was incorporated into the first part of the live show. Hosted by Gretel Killeen.

Full House

"Full House" was a live show that was broadcast on Day 8 (2007-04-29). It was aired in the timeslot usually occupied by Eviction shows. The relationship between Andrew and Hayley was revealed to the house, as was Billy's role to cause tension on Hayley's relationship. Because Hayley and Andrew had been able to keep their relationship a secret from the housemates for the week (as less than 50% of the housemates guessed their relationship), Big Brother revealed that they had earned $50,000 to be added to the prize money, which was previously set at zero. Big Brother also tempted the wildcard housemates to leave the White Room by offering a sum of money to them ($AUD 750), which Cruz accepted. Hosted by Gretel Killeen.

Wild Card Entry

"Wild Card Entry" was a live show that was broadcast on Day 11 (2007-05-02). The White Room housemates had left the room and one of them would enter the Big Brother house as a housemate. Hosted by Gretel Killeen.

Challenges

  • The first round was determined by nominations from the White Room housemates and Kara was eliminated with two votes.
  • The second round challenge was that each housemate had to pick up three major items of clothing and dress a model while airborne on a large steel frame.
    • Big Brother announced that the third round will be decided by the Big Brother housemates - it would determine the WR final housemate that enters the house.
  • The third round was determined by nominations from the Big Brother housemates. To cast their vote, they were to place a plastic ball into the corresponding tube for either Harrison or Demet.
    • After counting all the votes, the housemate that would enter the house as a wildcard was Demet, with 8 votes against 6.

Golden Key

"Golden Key" was a live show that was broadcast on Day 18 (2007-05-09). During this episode, a winner of the Starburst Golden Key promotion was selected from five finalists after a series of challenges. The finalists' names were:

#38: Carolyn
#61: Nick
#32: Natalie
#66: Angie
#17: Laura

For the mini-challenge, the finalists had to pick one of five discs in a bag which determined the lineup for the potential housemates to choose a golden key box to stand behind. After the contestants searched their boxes, which were filled with Starburst lollies, for the golden key, Nick found the key in his box and thus became the new Big Brother housemate. He entered the house during the weekly task performance. Hosted by Gretel Killeen.

Intruder Alert!

"Intruder Alert!" was a live 90 minute special, that aired on Day 31 (2007-05-22). This episode put two new housemates Daniela and Laura in the BB house as intruders. Also Hayley was evicted from the house, as either her or Andrew had to go (being the couple) and Hayley chose to be evicted over Andrew.

The Works

"The Works" is a scheduled Big Brother special focusing on behind the scenes footage, that will air on 2007-06-06. The show will be recorded on the same day at Network Ten's Sydney studios. It is unknown whether the audience will simply be watching the episode or be involved in the recording due to the Dreamworld auditorium not being used.[54]

Controversy

  • The Daily Telegraph had reported on 21 April 2007 - the day before the show's launch - that an internet hacker claimed to have obtained the names of the 18 housemates from the official website: "Aleisha, Andrew, Brodie, Cruz, Demet, Emma, Harrison, Hayley, Jamie, Joel, Kara, Kate, Rebecca, Sussanah, Thomas, TJ, Travis and Zoran".[55]
  • Because of the pre-recorded nature of launch shows, members of different forums and websites decided to have live streams using mobile phones allowing people to listen to the show before it was broadcast on national television. Because of this, recording of the show stopped until the streaming was stopped. Eventually, production staff offered prizes if audience members would pick out people from the crowd using phones to broadcast the show.[56]
  • The Daily Telegraph had reported that Big Brother producers had failed to "bleep" out offensive language when housemate Bodie told other housemates he was "dense cunt" during the PG-rated Daily Show on Tuesday 24 April, 2007.[57]
  • The Sunday Mail on 29 April 2007 had reported that the parents of Mormon housemate Rebecca, were upset that their daughter is under siege from fellow housemates over her decision not to join in their party antics.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
  • The Courier Mail, The Daily Telegraph and The Age had reported that backpackers, students and other young people were being paid as little as $50 a day cash-in-hand for stunt work for the Friday Night Live Games episodes of Big Brother. It is claimed that they were used to test the various stunts that the housemates would have to perform. The Office of Workplace Services and other government departments were investigating the claims to see if the producers Endemol Southern Star were in breach of any laws or regulations.[58][59]
  • Emma's father has recently died of cancer. Emma has not been told of her father's death by request of her family who do not want her Big Brother experience affected. However there has been criticism at Big Brother's decision to not tell her.
