Korea University is located in central Seoul, with a secondary campus in Jochiwon, South Korea, and is regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea [4],[5][6],[7],[8],[9]. In addition to its well-acknowledged academic reputation, the university is also esteemed for its history, strong traditions, and contributions to the nation. Through out turbulent modern history in the Republic of Korea, students of Korea University have dedicated their abilities in diverse areas for reforming this society. In general, the students of Korea University are well known for their rigid attachment and strong unity, as well as for their easy and loyal incorporation into the societies to which they belong [10],[11],[12].

Along the modern Korean history, Korea University has been one of the craddles of manpower in Korean society [13]. Korea University has nurtured the essential manpower to various aspects of the Korean society from academic field to entertainment business. A significant portion of prominent figures in Korea, including politicians, jurists, scholars, scientists, entrepreneurs, and sports celebrities, has been educated and produced from Korea University. In Korean society, Korea University has been indeed one of the major groups influencing the society for its progress [14].

Founded in 1905 as the first modern higher education institute in Korea, the University currently consists of 81 academic departments in 15 colleges and 75 research institutes, and has a student enrollment of over 30,000 at undergraduate and graduate levels. Korea University has striven to recast its old somewhat conservative image to global and future-oriented figures, and efforts for the recast have been fruited successfully so far [15], [16]. As part of the efforts, the educational exchange program in KU has been successfully concluded with plentiful foreign universities listed in the reference through out the world for better encounter with global experiences[17].

The Anam Campus of the University is located at the following bearings: 37°35′30″N 127°1′45″E / 37.59167°N 127.02917°E / 37.59167; 127.02917, which, when entered into Google Earth and viewed from a height of 2000m, will show the campus in its entirety.

Reputation

Korea University is one of the so-called "SKY" schools in Korea. The acronym is the first initials of the three most prestigious and highly selective universities in Korea: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. It means similar to "HYP" of U.S. :Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University .[18]

Academics

Korea University was put under the spotlight when it became one of the world’s top 200 universities. The Times, in its Higher Education Supplement, ranked Korea University 184th in the world. Social Sciences at Korea University ranked 66th while Liberal Arts ranked 89th. In 2006, a newer version of the world university ranking was released by the Times, and Korea University's ranking leaped up to 150th from the previous rank of 184th. Page 3 in The Times University Ranking 2006. [19] The Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announced that Korea university ranked 153rd in the world and 4th in Korea, based on the number of published papers in Science Citation Index journals [20]. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, Korea University ranked in the range of 301-400th [21]. In 2007, the Korean Ministry of Education, after assessing domestic MBA programs, named Korea University as the top MBA program in Korea [22]. The business programs at Korea University also obtained international recognition by acquiring Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) certifications in both undergraduate- and graduate levels and European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) for the first time in Korea, qualifying for what are considered to be two of the world's highest regarded certifications for business educational assessment [23].

Global KU Project

KU has carried out ‘Global KU Project’ whose aim is to get in the world’s top 100 schools by 2010 [25].

Internationalisation

In 2003, Korea University was the only university in the nation recognised for outstanding achievement in internationalisation. This evaluation of 121 domestic universities was conducted by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and included a competitive application process and strict on-site inspections. KU received high marks for its emphasis on the standardisation of English through expansion of English-mediated courses and innovative projects for globalisation. In 2006, Joongang Ilbo which is one of the major Korean newspapers put Korea University to the 2nd rank in the most globalised Korean universities, next to KAIST [26] [27]. This is the result of the determination and drive of the university to reach its goal of becoming a world-renowned university. The Global KU Project is now being more actively pursued than ever before, with the active recognition and financial support of the Korean government.
