2009 in Irish music
This is a summary of the year 2009 in the Irish music industry.
Summary
- In 2009, U2 will embark on a world tour following the expected release of the follow-up to their 2004 album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, in January. [1] [2] It was claimed that the band would play three shows in Croke Park, Dublin in front of 240,000 people. [3]
- The Priest Feast Tour featuring Judas Priest, Megadeth and Testament will play two Irish shows in February 2009, [4] prior to the start of its seven-concert UK run. The dates are February 10 at the O2 in Dublin and February 11 at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. [5]
- According to the Daily Mirror, Tina Turner will perform two shows at the newly refurbished Point Theatre, Dublin in 2009. A third concert may be added at a later date. Tickets are expected to go on sale in August 2008 and may cost up to €150. [6] Hot Press has concluded that Tina Turner will be in Dublin for a theatre show in March 2009 but is less certain of the venue, stating that it is likely to take place at the Point. Turner, who officially retired from live performance eight years ago, decided to tour again after performing at the Grammys with Beyoncé. “The response was overwhelming,” she said. “Everywhere I went people were asking me when I was going back on tour again. So after a lot of thought and planning we announced an American tour. Now Europe beckons!” [7] On August 28 2008, after three months of uncertainty, a March 26 date was announced, with tickets (priced between €91.25 and €156.25) going on sale on Thursday September 4 2008. [8]
- Prince may possibly reschedule his June 16 2008 show in Croke Park for 2009. [9] [10] The show was cancelled with just six days notice for what were described as “reasons beyond the control” of both the artist and MCD. [11] [12] He previously played in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on July 7 1990.
- Oxegen 2009 is scheduled to take place from July 10-12.
- Electric Picnic 2009 is scheduled to take place from September 4-6.
