(100417) Philipglass is an asteroid located in the central main belt . It was discovered on March 7, 1996 by the Austrian amateur astronomer Erich Meyer at the Davidschlag observatory ( IAU code 540). The observatory is located in the Davidschlag district of the Kirchschlag municipality near Linz , Upper Austria .
The asteroid is part of the Astraea family, a group of asteroids named after (5) Astraea .
(100417) Philipglass was named on December 2, 2009 after the American musician , composer and representative of minimal music Philip Glass (* 1937). His operas Einstein on the Beach from 1976 and Kepler from 2009 received special mention in the dedication .
