(16583) Oersted is an asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on July 26, 1992 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory ( IAU code 809) in Chile .
The asteroid was named on July 22, 2013 after the Danish chemist and physicist Hans Christian Ørsted (1777-1851), who discovered the magnetic effect of electric current in 1820 and was instrumental in founding the Polytechnic School in 1829 ( Danish Den Polytekniske Læreanstalt ) in Copenhagen, the predecessor of today's Technical University of Denmark . He is the name giver for the unit of magnetic field strength (abbreviated with the unit symbol Oe).
