(2609) Kiril-Metodi is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered by the Soviet astronomer husband Nikolai and Lyudmila Tschernych on August 9, 1978 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( IAU code 095). There had been several sightings of the asteroid before: on March 12, 1934 under the provisional designation 1934 EG at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg and on January 26 and 28, 1947 (1947 BJ) at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay , Wisconsin .

The light curve of the asteroid was examined on February 15 and 17 to 20, 2010 with the 50 cm Ritchey-Chrétien telescope at the Oakley Southern Sky Observatory in Coonabarabran , New South Wales . The rotation period of (2609) Kiril-Metodi could be determined to be 4.94 hours for one rotation.

In a publication from 1995 (et al.), The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defines (2609) Kiril-Metodi as belonging to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

(2609) Kiril-Metodi was named on March 28, 1983 after the brothers Kyrill of Saloniki and Method von Saloniki , also known as the saints Cyrill and Method , Slavic missionaries of the 9th century who are among other things pioneers of the Cyrillic script .
