(274020) Skywalker is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered on September 12, 2007 by the amateur astronomers Stefan Karge and Erwin Schwab . The discovery took place from the Hans-Ludwig-Neumann-Observatory ( IAU-Code B01) on the Kleiner Feldberg in the Taunus .
On March 5, 2015, the naming of the asteroid was confirmed by the International Astronomical Union . Skywalker is the family name of Anakin Skywalker and his son Luke Skywalker in the fictional Star Wars films . According to the discoverer Erwin Schwab, the German translation of "Himmelswanderer" is also intended to recall the designation changing stars , the collective term for moving heavenly bodies such as planets and asteroids, as opposed to fixed stars .
The asteroid is approximately 2.5 kilometers in diameter.
