(2870) Haupt ( 1981 LD ; 1959 RY ; 1963 UP ; 1963 VL ) is an approximately 15 km large asteroid of the inner main belt that was discovered on June 4, 1981 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Lowell Observatory , Anderson Mesa Station ( Anderson Mesa ) near Flagstaff , Arizona ( IAU code 688).

designation

(2870) Haupt was named after the Austrian astronomer Hermann F. Haupt (1926-2017), who was the director of the Graz University Observatory (IAU code 580). As one of the pioneers of the photometry of small planets , he made photoelectric observations at the Lick Observatory (IAU code 662) in 1951 and 1952 .
