(2982) Muriel ( 1981 JA 3 ; 1973 YP ; 1978 SY 5 ) is an approximately 15 kilometers large asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on May 6, 1981 by the American astronomer Carolyn Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory about 80 kilometers northeast of San Diego , California ( IAU code 675) was discovered. It belongs to the Eos family , a group of asteroids named after (221) Eos .

(2982) Muriel was named after Muriel May Scott Shoemaker , the mother-in-law of the explorer Carolyn Shoemaker.
