(2991) Bilbo ( 1982 HV ; 1975 JC ; 1979 SY 3 ; 1982 KB 2 ) is an approximately eight kilometers large asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on April 21, 1982 by the American astronomer Martin Watt at the La Silla Observatory on Lowell Observatory , Anderson Mesa Station ( Anderson Mesa ) near Flagstaff , Arizona ( IAU code 688).

(2991) Bilbo was named after Bilbo Baggins , a character in The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien , after whom the asteroid (2675) Tolkien is named. The naming was suggested by the American astronomer GV Williams .
