(5196) Bustelli is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 30, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the Second Trojan Survey of 1973, during which Tom Gehrels scanned field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar Observatory .
The asteroid belongs to the Eunomia family, a group named after (15) Eunomia , to which probably five percent of the asteroids in the main belt belong.
(5196) Bustelli was named after the Swiss sculptor and modeler of porcelain figures Franz Anton Bustelli (1723–1763), who is considered one of the most important porcelain artists of the Rococo and worked at the porcelain manufacturer Nymphenburg until his death in 1763 .
