(5413) Smyslov is an asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Tschernych on March 13, 1977 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( IAU code 095). An unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid had already occurred at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj under the provisional designation 1971 BF 4 on January 28, 1971.

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 17.572 (± 0.306) km .

The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (5413) Smyslov are almost identical to those of the two smaller ones, assuming the absolute magnitude of 14.4 and 15.6 compared to 12.2, asteroids (18926) 1978 VW 2 and ( 157707) 2006 AM 51 .

(5413) Smyslov was named on June 20, 1997 after the Russian- Soviet chess grandmaster Vasily Smyslow (1921-2010), who was the seventh world chess champion from 1957 to 1958 . Smyslow was also a trained opera singer .
