(5800) Pollock is an asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered on October 16, 1982 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kle Observ Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . An unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid (1971 SA 2 ) had already taken place in 1971 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj .
(5800) Pollock belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
The asteroid is named after Jackson Pollock , an American Abstract Expressionist painter from the New York School . The designation was made on the proposal of the Czech astronomer Jana Tichá by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on November 11, 2000.
