(8589) Stellaris is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

(8589) Stellaris is named after the bittern , whose scientific name is Botaurus stellaris . At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the bittern was on the Dutch Red List of Endangered Species . The first letters of the asteroids (8585) to (8600) form the phrase Per aspera ad astra .
