(8754) Leucorodia is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (8754) Leucorodia are almost identical to those of four smaller asteroids, assuming the absolute magnitude of 14.2, 15.7, 15.5 and 16.2 versus 13.1 : (18462) Riccò , (161628) 2005 YW 29 , (204518) 2005 EM 25 and (240713) 2005 GK 110 .
(8754) Leucorodia is named after the spoonbill , a walking bird , whose scientific name is Platalea leucorodia . At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the spoonbill was on the Dutch Red List of Endangered Species .
