Ádám Politzer (born October 1, 1835 in Alberti , Austrian Empire , † August 10, 1920 in Vienna ) was an Austrian doctor in the field of ear medicine .

Life

Adam Politzer studied medicine in Vienna, especially with Josef von Škoda , Karl von Rokitansky , Johann von Oppolzer and Carl Ludwig , where Oppolzer influenced him the most.

In 1859 he received his doctorate in Vienna and then worked in Carl Ludwig's laboratory. Then he was u. a. Trained with Anton Friedrich Freiherr von Tröltsch , Hermann von Helmholtz , Claude Bernard and Rudolf Albert von Kölliker . He studied the microscopic and macroscopic anatomy of the labyrinth with Albert von Kölliker in Würzburg and later with Joseph Toynbee in London .

He completed his habilitation in ear medicine in 1861, became a lecturer in otology at the University of Vienna and in 1871 an associate professor. Together with Josef Gruber (1827–1900) he headed the Vienna University Ear Clinic from 1873. In 1913, Politzer was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

A method of active ventilation of the ear trumpet by the doctor is named after Politzer ( politzern or Politzer air shower , blowing air into one nostril using a rubber balloon with the second nostril closed and swallowing at the same time).

Adam Politzer found his final resting place in the Old Israelite Department of the Vienna Central Cemetery (1st Gate, Group 8, Row 1, No. 45).
