Club career

Career start in Chile and preliminary contract with Manchester United

Ángelo Henríquez started playing football at the age of 13 in the youth department of the CF Universidad de Chile . Before that, the young Chilean played tennis. During his youth, a right of first refusal was agreed with the renowned English club Manchester United . In the 2011 season, the young striker initially received a contract for the first team of the CF Universidad. His team won the championship and the Copa Sudamericana in 2011 , but the young Henríquez has not yet played. In 2012, he received the coach's trust and scored goals in all competitions. With eight goals in ten league games, he was involved in winning the Apertura 2012. Also in the Copa Libertadores 2012 he was able to convince with four goals in ten games. CF Universidad only failed in the semi-finals at CA Boca Juniors from Argentina. In September 2012 Henríquez 'preliminary contract with Manchester was completed. The young Chilean was only used with the Red Devils in the U-21 Premier League.

Lending deals with Wigan and Saragossa

To gain more match practice, Henríquez was loaned out to Wigan Athletic in January 2013 . Although he was able to score a goal in his first league appearance for Wigan only a few minutes after being substituted on, he initially received no more playing time as a result. Coach Roberto Martínez relied on Arouna Koné after he returned from the African Championship. Nothing changed until the end of the loan and Henríquez only made four league games as a substitute. On the other hand, he was used more often in the 2012/13 FA Cup , which his team surprisingly won 1-0 against runners-up Manchester City . The Chilean sat on the bench in the final but was not substituted on.

On August 28, 2013 Henríquez moved to the end of the 2013/14 season in the Spanish Segunda División to Real Saragossa . The club had previously been relegated to the top division after four years. The young Chilean was able to convince in the first few games and scored four goals and one assist in six appearances. In the rest of the season he was unable to continue the trend and had to take a seat on the bench or in the stands. Only after the takeover by the new coach Víctor Muñoz in March 2014 did Henríquez fight his way back into the team and was mainly used in the left midfield until the end of the season.

Loan and move to Dinamo Zagreb

On August 11, 2014, the Chilean signed another loan deal and moved to the Croatian record champions Dinamo Zagreb for the 2014/15 season . Just four days later he was substituted on for Duje Čop after 73 minutes in the league game against RNK Split and defended the existing 1-0 lead with his team. Until the end of the season, the Chilean was primarily used as a substitute, as before in Saragossa. Completely superior and without a single defeat, Zagreb won the Croatian championship for the tenth time in a row and was also a cup winner. In the UEFA Europa League 2014/15 his club failed in the group stage. The striker scored the most goals for Zagreb in all three competitions. In the league he was the second top scorer behind Andrej Kramarić , who scored 21 goals in the first half of the season and then moved to Leicester City in winter . For the 2015/16 season Henríquez was finally committed after the successful loan.

National team

Ángelo Henríquez went through various junior national teams and took part in, for example, the U-15 soccer South American championship in 2009 and the U-17 soccer South American championship in 2011. For the Chilean national football team he made his debut on November 14, 2012 in the 1: 3 defeat in the friendly against Serbia . After 20 minutes he came on for the injured Alexis Sánchez and scored the only goal of his team in the 88th minute. Henríquez won the 2015 Copa América with Chile for the first time in history . In the third and final group game against Bolivia , he was substituted on for star player Alexis Sánchez at halftime and was able to convince with two assists until the end of the game (final score 5: 0). He got his second appearance in the final against Argentina , when he came on for Eduardo Vargas in extra time and defended the 0-0 draw with his team until the end. In the penalty shootout, the Chileans then won 4-1.
