The Çanakkale 1915 Bridge ( Turkish Çanakkale 1915 Köprüsü ) is a suspension bridge under construction in Turkey , which is to span the Dardanelles . It will be part of the planned Kınalı-Tekirdağ-Çanakkale-Balıkesir highway and, in terms of its span, the longest suspension bridge in the world .

The reasons given for the project are great time savings and the lack of an alternative route to Otoyol 5 . The project aims to shorten the travel time between the Aegean region ( Izmir , Manisa ) and Europe as well as the European part of Istanbul and make the journey easier, for example by avoiding the coastal region near Çanakkale and Balıkesir , which is clearly congested in terms of traffic during the holiday season. Today the Dardanelles are crossed by ferries.

Surname

The name of the bridge is said to recall the Battle of Gallipoli in World War I , which is named after the province of Çanakkale in Turkey .

Project

The project, which was announced in 2012, was presented to the public on September 1, 2014 by the Turkish Minister of Transport. It will create a link between Turkey and Europe that bypasses the metropolitan area of Istanbul. The Japanese conglomerate IHI , which was already involved in the construction of the Osman-Gazi Bridge , announced its interest in the project shortly afterwards, but at the same time pointed out the expected competition from Chinese and South Korean companies.

The tender also includes the Malkara - Lapseki section of the Kınalı-Tekirdağ-Çanakkale-Balıkesir highway . The project is being implemented as a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) project.

The suspension bridge as such will be 3869 m long and have spans of 923 +  2023  + 923 m. Together with the 775 m and 525 m long ramp bridges, the structure will be a total of 5169 m long. 2 × 3 lanes with hard shoulder will be set up on the 36 m wide carriageway. The size of the main opening (2023) numerically corresponds to the centenary of the founding of modern Turkey.

The tender of January 26, 2017 was won by a joint venture between the South Korean companies Daelim and SK Group together with the Turkish companies Limak Holding and Yapı Merkezi .

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 18, 2017, and were attended by, among others, President Erdoğan , Prime Minister Yıldırım and the South Korean Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kang Ho-in . The date marks the anniversary of a futile attack by British and French warships in the course of the Battle of Gallipoli that resulted in the loss of three and severe damage to another three of the ships. The completion date is stated as March 18, 2022.
