Balıkesir is a Turkish province in the west of the country. In the west it borders on the Aegean Sea , in the north on the province of Çanakkale and the Marmara Sea . Balıkesir has been a metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ( Büyükşehir belediyesi ) since 2012 and consists of 20 İlçe.

More than a million people live in the province, of which the provincial capital of the same name, Balıkesir, has around 350,000 inhabitants.

Administrative division

The province is divided into 20 İlçe , which resemble a district in terms of settlement in rural areas and a district in urban agglomerations. In 2012, the old municipality of Balıkesir was dissolved and a large city municipality ( Balıkesir Büyükşehir Belediyesi ) was established in its place . For this purpose, the old urban area was divided into several municipalities ( Belediye ) and with these and neighboring municipalities, the metropolitan municipality was formed.
