Élan is a song by the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish . It is the first single from their eighth studio album Endless Forms Most Beautiful .

Origin and content

The song was written and produced by Tuomas Holopainen. Holopainen was inspired by a quote from the American poet Walt Whitman, whom he admired . The song is about the meaning of life, which can be different for everyone. According to bassist Marco Hietala , Élan was released as the first single because it was the most radio- friendly song on the entire album. A music video was shot for the song, which, according to Tuomas Holopainen , features some well-known Finnish actors .

The fact that the song appeared on the Internet platform YouTube before it was officially released made the band angry.

“Stealing someone else's music and releasing it before we can is extremely hurtful. […] It's the first thing people hear about our album, and then this way. Of course that hurts and we will not let it go unnoticed, we have already found the person responsible and we have publicly announced who it was and that this is clearly the wrong way to go. "

- Floor Jansen

The single contains the song Élan in the album version, the radio version and an alternative version created by Petri Alanko as well as the song Sagan , which is not represented on the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful .

Gunnar Sauermann from the German magazine Metal Hammer described Élan as a “ poppy rocker who elegantly takes the hit curve just before the nasty kitsch cliff”. Anyone who draws conclusions about the album from this song would be “ shipwrecked ”. For Jens Peters from the German magazine Rock Hard , the folk instrumentation of the song " creates a playful, dreamy flair over which Floor Jansen's expressive voice is enthroned". Frank Wilkens from the online magazine Metalnews.de, on the other hand, described Élan as a “ratings hit that is pretty folky, but not really one of the band's big moments”.

Élan rose to number three in the Finnish single charts. In Germany and Switzerland the single reached number 33, while in Austria it reached number 53.
