His father, Joey Guðjónsson, an Icelandic international , was playing on loan in England at the time - first with Aston Villa and then with Wolverhampton Wanderers . Ísak Bergmann is the eldest of the four children of Jófríður María Guðlaugsdóttir and Joey Guðjónsson; his younger brothers are Jóel Þór (* 2005), Daniel Ingi (* 2007) and Emil Karl (* 2010). In his childhood and youth he appeared for the ÍA Akranes , for which he was active in the club's youth until 2018. During this time he also gained his first experience in the national teams of the Icelandic Football Association . On September 22, 2018, the then 15-year-old was on the bench in the 1-1 home draw of ÍA's men's team against Þróttur Reykjavík , before his father, who had been coaching since the beginning of the year, replaced Þórður in the 81st minute of the game Þorsteinn Þórðarson was substituted on. At this point, ÍA was already established as a climber to the Icelandic first class ; for the team it was the last game of the season before promotion. In the end, ÍA Akranes - tied on points with second-placed HK Kópavogur - took first place in the table.

Change to Sweden

Subsequently, the young Icelander was courted by various clubs - thanks to his relatives, he also had excellent contacts abroad and especially to England. In the winter of 2018, the left-footer then joined IFK Norrköping with play in Fotbollsallsvenskan , the highest Swedish football league. After training with the professional team for the entire season, the 1.80 m offensive player had a 4-0 home win over AFC Eskilstuna on September 26, 2019, almost one year to the day after his debut in men's football for the first time in Fotbollsallsvenskan 2019 on the bench. In the game Jóhannesson was substituted on in the 83rd minute by his coach Jens Gustafsson as a substitute for the Finnish international Simon Skrabb . After that, he sat unused on the bench in two of the following five league games until the end of the season and ranked fifth with the team in the final standings.

National team career

Appearances in the Icelandic U-15 and U-16 national teams

Jóhannesson gained his first experience in a youth national team of the Icelandic Football Association when he played in two international matches of the Icelandic U-15 team against his age colleagues from the Faroe Islands at the end of October 2017 and contributed a goal in a 7-0 victory in the second game . In the following March 2018 Jóhannesson was shortly after his 15th birthday for the so-called UEFA Development Tournament , a development tournament of the UEFA U-16 national teams, for the first time in the Icelandic U-16 selection taken and completed during the early April held tournament three International matches. Just a month later, he played two more friendly internationals for Iceland's U-15s against Switzerland , scoring another goal for his home country. In August 2018, the offensive player appeared in four further U-16 international matches against the Faroe Islands , China , Norway and Finland and scored one goal each in a 2-1 win over Norway and a 1-0 win over Finland.

Goal-threatening U-17 international and first appearances for the U-19 juniors

Just two months later, the 15-year-old who started Icelandic U-17 team in the qualification for the U-17 European Championship in 2019 and was about one of the most outstanding Icelandic players. Already in the first game of the regular season against Ukraine , Jóhannesson scored two early goals and managed a 2-2 draw with his team in the end. In the next game, three days later, against Bosnia and Herzegovina , after being substituted on six minutes earlier, he scored the goal with a penalty in the 68th minute to make it 1-1. In the subsequent 8-0 victory over his colleagues from Gibraltar , Jóhannesson was also able to enter the goalscorer list with two hits.

In the subsequent elite round of qualification, Iceland took first place in March 2019, ahead of Germany , Belarus and Slovenia , which means that the Icelanders qualified for the European Championship finals in Ireland in May 2019 . Jóhannesson, who was still used in attacking midfield, contributed one assist in his three appearances in the elite round, as well as two goals, both of which he scored in the last group game against Belarus. Under the Icelandic U-17 national coach Davíð Snorri Jónasson , he was part of the 20-strong Icelandic squad that took part in the European Championship finals and was the second youngest player in the squad behind Hákon Arnar Haraldsson , as well as one of the youngest participants in this European Championship . The offensive danger of the now 16-year-old was largely absent during the European Championship. In appearances in the three games in his home country, he only managed to score one goal and that in the 2-4 defeat in the last group game against Portugal . After just one win and two losses, Iceland finished third in Group C and was eliminated from the tournament early.

Then it took another five months until Jóhannesson was again considered in a national team. This time Þorvaldur Örlygsson brought him into the Icelandic U-19 national team for two friendly internationals against Finland and Sweden in October 2019 . In both games as a regular player, the offensive midfielder was also brought into the Icelandic U-19 squad for the basic round of the U-19 European Championship qualification that took place a month later . Here, too, Jóhannesson acted as a regular player and was used by U-19 coach Örlygsson in two games in attacking midfield and even completed the last game as a center forward. In the 5-2 victory over the Greek U-19 juniors , he participated with a goal and an assist. With two wins and one defeat from three games, the team qualified second in Group 4 behind Belgium for the subsequent elite round in March 2020.
