Óbidos , officially Portuguese Município de Óbidos , is a municipality founded in 1697 by the Portuguese conquerors in what is now Brazil . It lies at the narrowest point of the entire Amazon in the state of Pará between Belém and the capital of the state of Amazonas , Manaus . The river is only about 2 kilometers wide here, but still 93 meters deep. It is named after the Portuguese place Óbidos .

According to the 2010 census by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), Óbidos had a population of 49,333 inhabitants, called Obidensians. As of July 1, 2019, the population was estimated at 52,137 inhabitants, who live in a large community area of ​​around 28,021.4 km². In terms of area, the municipality ranks 8th out of the state's 144 municipalities and 41st in terms of population. Mathematically, this results in a population density of 1.8 people per km².

Óbidos is the seat of the Catholic diocese of Óbidos .

Óbidos borders Suriname in the north . Surrounding communities are Almeirim in the north , Santarém and Juruti in the south, Alenquer in the east and Oriximiná in the west .

Local government

Francisco José Alfaia de Barros of the then Partido da República (PR) was elected city ​​prefect (mayor) in the 2016 local elections for the period from 2017 to 2020.
