Magnus Öström (born May 3, 1965 in Skultuna , Västmanland County , Sweden ) is a Swedish drummer who was first known as a member of the jazz trio est .

Live and act

Öström, the son of an artist couple, was influenced by the music of his older brother and heard Jimi Hendrix , Deep Purple , The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd as a child . At the age of eight he built his first drum kit and was soon playing with a friend, Esbjörn Svensson . Since 1981 he attended the music school in Västerås and played with Svensson in a trio. Between 1983 and 1985 he studied at the adult education center in Sjövik before continuing his studies at the Stockholm Conservatory . During this time he played with various bands on the Stockholm scene; between 1987 and 1992 he was a member of the band of singer Monica Borrfors. Since 1989 he worked again with Svensson, first in the group Stock Street B , then again in a trio that Dan Berglund joined in 1993 ; est toured very successfully internationally and recorded twelve albums up to Svensson's accidental death. He also worked with Bobo Stenson , Lennart Åberg , Palle Danielsson , Nils Landgren , Stina Nordenstam , Peter Gullin and Steve Dobrogosz as well as numerous American musicians such as Michele Hendricks , Benny Golson , Mulgrew Miller , Stefon Harris , Pat Metheny and Alan Pasqua . In 2010 he founded his own quartet with guitarist Andreas Hourdakis, keyboardist Petter Bergander and bassist Peter Fors; for his first album, Thread of Life , he received an ECHO Jazz in 2012 . He can also be heard on several albums by Nils Landgren, Lars Danielsson , Viktoria Tolstoy , Jeanette Lindström and Nicolai Dunger . With Bugge Wesseltoft and Dan Berglund he had success in the Trio Rymden .
