Anywhere but Here (Original title: Anywhere But Here ) is an American film drama by Wayne Wang in 1999. The screenplay wrote Alvin Sargent based on a novel by Mona Simpson . The main roles were played by Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman .

Adele August and her 14-year-old daughter Ann August moved from Bay City, Wisconsin to Los Angeles in 1995 . Ann is not thrilled to have to give up her old life. The mother and daughter live in a small apartment and sometimes Adele is unable to pay the bills.

Adele wants her daughter to become an actress; Ann would rather go to college . After about two years, Adele sells her car to enable Ann to study.
