(16766) Righi is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 18 October 1996 by the Italian Amateur Astronomers Vittorio Goretti , from his private observatory in Pianoro from ( IAU code was discovered 610).

The asteroid belongs to the Gefion family, a group of asteroids of the central main belt named after (1272) Gefion . The group used to be called the Ceres family (after (1) Ceres , Vincenzo Zappalà 1995) and the Minerva family (after (93) Minerva , AstDyS-2 database).

The celestial body was named on March 9, 2001 after the Italian physicist Augusto Righi (1850–1920), who continued Heinrich Hertz's research and who inspired his student Guglielmo Marconi with these findings .
