(2434) Bateson ( 1981 KA ; 1932 HC ; 1955 VC ; 1959 GU ; 1966 VP ; 1973 AK 2 ; 1977 TV 3 ; 1977 VV 1 ) is an asteroid of the outer main belt approximately 17 kilometers in size , which appeared on May 27, 1981 from the New Zealand astronomers Alan C. Gilmore and Pamela Margaret Kilmartin at the Mt John University Observatory on Mount John in the Mackenzie District in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand ( IAU code 474).

designation

(2434) Bateson was named after the New Zealand astronomer Frank Bateson (1909-2007), who from 1928 was director of the department for variable stars at the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand . His work led to the establishment of the Mt John University Observatory, where he worked as an astronomer until 1968.
