(249541) Steinem is an asteroid located in the outer main belt that was discovered by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer ( IAU code C51) on April 19, 2010, an unmanned space telescope operated by NASA that began operations in January 2010.

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 5.257 (± 0.153) km and the albedo to be 0.058 (± 0.010). It can therefore be assumed that (249551) stones have a dark surface.

(249541) Steinem belongs to the Eos family, a group of asteroids, which typically have large semiaxes from 2.95 to 3.1 AU , bounded inward by the Kirkwood gap of the 7: 3 resonance with Jupiter , and orbital inclinations between 8 ° and 12 °. The group is named after the asteroid (221) Eos . The family is believed to have emerged from a collision more than a billion years ago.

The timeless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (249541) Steinem are almost identical to those of twelve other asteroids, for example (51812) 2001 OE 7 , (105227) 2000 PO 5 and (128,745) 2,004 RO 170 .

(249541) Steinem was named on February 22, 2016 after the American feminist , journalist and suffragette Gloria Steinem (* 1934). The Venus crater Gloria, on the other hand, was named after Gloria as a Portuguese first name in 1985 .
