(2939) Coconino ( 1982 DP ; 1952 HU 3 ; 1976 ST 4 ) is an approximately six kilometers large asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on February 21, 1982 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Lowell Observatory , Anderson Mesa Station ( Anderson Mesa ) near Flagstaff , Arizona ( IAU code 688).

designation

(2939) Coconino was named after Coconino County , Arizona, where the Lowell Observatory where the asteroid was discovered is located. The word "Coconino" comes from the Hopi language and mainly refers to the Havasupai and Walapai Indian tribes living in the west of the Hopi . A secondary meaning applies to Hopi children who have not yet been introduced to the religious practices of Hopi society.
