(42516) Oistrach is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen on November 11, 1993 at the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory ( IAU code 033) in the Tautenburg Forest . There had already been sightings of the asteroid on October 21, 1993 under the provisional designation 1993 UL 9 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .
After PER- FORMING classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ) was a spectroscopic investigation of Gianluca Masi Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel (42516) Oistrakh, were divided in the asteroid after the spectral classes C, S and V, the assigned to dark C asteroids .
The rotation period of (42516) Oistrach was determined in 2015 by Adam Waszczak, Chan-Kao Chang, Eran Ofek et al. examined. However, the light curve was not sufficient for a determination.
The track from (42156) Oistrach was secured in 2002 so that numbering could be assigned. On January 6, 2003, the asteroid was named after Dawid Fyodorowitsch Oistrach (1908–1974) and his son Igor Dawidowitsch Oistrach (* 1931), both violin virtuosos .
