(5168) Jenner is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on March 6, 1986 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made while scanning photo plates taken by Tom Gehrels with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope at the Palomar observatory .

The asteroid was named after the English country doctor Edward Jenner (1749-1823) who developed the modern vaccination against smallpox .
