(55636) 2002 TX 300 is a Trans-Neptunian object that was discovered in October 2002. The Kuiper belt object is classified as a Cubewano and has a diameter of 286 ± 10 kilometers.

discovery

2002 TX 300 was discovered on October 15, 2002 by the NEAT program .

After its discovery, the TX 300 could be identified in photos from August 27, 1954 in 2002 and its orbit calculated relatively precisely. Since then, the planetoid has been observed through various telescopes. In January 2018, there were 374 observations over a period of 63 years from 20 oppositions.

properties

Orbit

The orbit of 2002 TX 300 (blue) compared to those of Haumea (green) and Neptune (gray)

2002 TX 300 orbits the sun on an elliptical orbit ( eccentricity = 0.123) between 37.75 and 48.38  AU distance. The orbit is inclined 25.86 ° to the ecliptic . The orbital period is 282.62 years. It will reach perihelion in mid-2059. It is currently about 42.5 AU from the Sun.

It is a member of the Haumea family and a piece of Haumea's original ice mantle. All known members of the Haumea family - incl. 2002 TX 300 and the Haumea moon Hiʻiaka - together have only about 2% of Haumea's mass.

size

On the occasion of a star occultation on October 9, 2009, the diameter of 2002 TX 300 was determined to be 286 ± 10 km. Previously, it was still considered a dwarf planet candidate with estimates up to 640 km in diameter .

rotation

2002 TX 300 rotates once around its axis in 8 hours and 7 minutes. However, if the asteroid is irregularly shaped, a period of rotation that is twice as long cannot be completely ruled out.

surface

The object has a very high albedo of 0.88, which is why its size was initially several times overestimated. The light surface consists mainly of water ice, which is indicated by strong corresponding absorption bands in its spectrum. The mineralogical analysis suggests a significant proportion of larger (H 2 O) ice particles. In contrast, the occurrence of tholines is extremely low, which is attributed to another recent collision.
