(6099) Saarland is an asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen on October 30, 1991 at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033). There had already been several unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid: on September 21, 1935 under the provisional designation 1935 SO at the State Observatory in Heidelberg-Königstuhl , on October 13, 1963 (1963 TO) at the Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana, and on September 20 , 1963 . and November 21, 1984 (1984 WU 4 ) at the French Observatoire de Calern .

Mean distance from the sun ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid lie within the respective limit values that are defined for the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called Hertha family, according to (135) Hertha ).

The railway from (6099) Saarland was secured in 1994 so that numbering could be assigned. On July 12, 1995, the asteroid was named after the state of Saarland at the suggestion of Freimut Börngen .
