(63163) Jerusalem is an asteroid of the main inner belt , an asteroid field between Mars and Jupiter . The asteroid was discovered on December 23, 2000 by the Czech astronomer Michael Kočer at the Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . The asteroid had previously been sighted on May 27 and June 4, 1998 under the provisional designation 1998 KT 65 at the Lincoln Laboratory Experimental Test Site in Socorro , New Mexico .
The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 4.339 km (± 0.048), the albedo as 0.235 (± 0.033).
The asteroid belongs to the Phocaea family, a group of asteroids named after (25) Phocaea . The 4: 1 orbital resonance with the planet Jupiter is characteristic of this group . The solar orbit of (63163) Jerusalem is steeply inclined at more than 25 ° to the ecliptic of the solar system , which is characteristic of Phocaea asteroids.
(63163) Jerusalem was named after the city of Jerusalem on November 26, 2004 . The appointment came at the suggestion of Michael Kočer and his wife Martina, who helped in the discovery of the asteroid.
