(7947) Toland is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 30 January 1992 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory ( IAU code in 809) Chile was discovered. The first sightings of the asteroid had already been made in September 1977 under the provisional designation 1977 RW16 at the Palomar Observatory (IAU code 675).
(7947) Toland was named after the Irish philosopher and free thinker of the Enlightenment John Toland (1670-1722).
