(8751) Nigricollis is an asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (8771) nigricollis are almost identical with those of six smaller, if one of the absolute brightness of 15.0, 15.8, 16.3, 16.1, 16.0 and 16 5 compared to 14.0, asteroids: (60183) Falcone , (150597) 2000 WA 140 , (168386) 1997 SR 23 , (201818) 2003 YJ 19 , (229264) 2005 AR 31 and (239418) 2007 TY 93 .
(8751) Nigricollis is named after the black-necked grebe , whose scientific name is Podiceps nigricollis . At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the black-necked grebe was on the Dutch Red List of Endangered Species .
