(8776) Campestris is an asteroid of the central main belt , which was discovered on October 16, 1977 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery took place during the 3rd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded by the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 17 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .
When examining the light curve of the asteroid in 2009, 2015 and 2018, it could not be determined. The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be around 10.5 kilometers. With an albedo of 0.058 (± 0.008) it has a very dark surface.
(8776) Campestris is named after the wood pipit , whose scientific name is Anthus campestris . At the time of the naming of the asteroid on February 2, 1999, the wood pipit was on the Dutch and European Red Lists of Endangered Birds .
