(8970) Islandica is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on September 29, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .
The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 9.266 (± 0.383) kilometers, the albedo as 0.062 (± 0.006).
The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (8970) Islandica are almost identical to those of twelve other asteroids, of which (23878) 1998 SN 2 is the largest with 14.5, assuming absolute brightness .
(8970) Islandica is named for the spatula , whose scientific name is Bucephala islandica . At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the spatula was on the European Red List of Endangered Birds .
