Events
Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East
- Battle of Ipsos (Phrygia): Antigonus I. Monophthalmos and his son Demetrios I. Poliorketes are defeated in the Fourth Diadoch War in Asia Minor by the opposing Diadoch coalition of Cassander , Lysimachos and Seleukos I. War elephants are used on both sides. Antigonus falls in battle; he can be considered the last representative of the unity of the Alexander Empire. His dominion is divided between the victors: Lysimachus wins western Asia Minor and the Black Sea coast, Seleukides Cappadocia (under the governor Ariarathes II ) and Syria. Demetrios escapes to Ephesus and struggles with his own mercenary army over the next few years. Pyrrhos I , who fought as Demetrius's brother-in-law at his side with Ipsos, later (for four years) comes as a hostage into the care of Ptolemy I.
- Lysimachus renames the city of Antigoneia on the Marmara Sea in Nikea . In Pergamon he appoints Philetairos , the ancestor of the Attalids, as governor.
- Seleucus I founds the city of Antioch on the Orontes in newly acquired Syria , which soon replaces Seleukia as the most important city of the Seleucid Empire.
