Lists on the subject

The Werba ( Russian Верба , English transcription : Verba , GRAU index : 9K333 Werba ) is a Russian shoulder-mounted short - range anti - aircraft missile . The NATO code name is SA-25 .

development

The 9K333 Werba was developed as the successor to the 9K38 Igla in the KBM design office. The first tests took place in 2011 and the first weapons were delivered to the Russian armed forces in 2014 . In contrast to the 9K38 Igla, the Infrared Seeker Head of the Werba has been improved in order to better distinguish between the actual target and IR decoys .

In 2016, Russia offered India the advertising MANPADS for sale.

technology

The Werba works according to the fire-and-forget principle - after firing, the rocket pursues its target independently, the shooter does not have to continue to aim at it, and after the start there is no longer any connection between the launch platform and the rocket.

The 9M336 guided missiles are housed in sealed GRP transport and launch containers. The 9P521 handle with integrated electronics, thermoelectric battery and a sighting device with daylight target optics is attached to the starting container . Werba weighs 17.25 kg when ready to start. The 1L229V - friend-foe detection system and the 1PN97M Maugli-2M - thermal imaging device can be connected to the sighting device . The 9M336 missile is equipped with a passive homing head from LOMO , the detector of which works on three bandwidths in the infrared and ultraviolet range. The seeker head enables the fight against targets in bad weather or at night. Small head-on targets can also be fought. The warhead weighs 2.5 kg and is detonated by an impact fuse or proximity fuse . One serves as a drive solid - rocket motor is ignited, when the ejected by a gas charge missile, the launch tube has left a few meters.

The Werba can be used to fight aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles . The vertical range of application of the guided weapon is 10 to 3,500 m with a horizontal combat range of 0.5 to 6.0 km. Air targets approaching from the front can be fought up to a flight speed of 400 m / s. The maximum airspeed for combating an air target that is flying away is 320 m / s.

commitment

During the crisis in Ukraine in early June 2014, a Ukrainian military plane may have been hit by a werba used by the pro-Russian militia. While initially only the Ukrainian side claimed the use of the missile, other sources speak of the fact that the pro-Russian side confirmed the use. The type of aircraft was initially specified differently depending on the source. The Ukrainian side initially spoke of an Antonov An-26 transport aircraft , while the pro-Russian side stated that it was an Antonov An-30 , an aerial aircraft. The latter was later confirmed by the Ukrainian side. The number of victims is still unclear.
