The Komi ASSR ( Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the Komi ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . It emerged from the Autonomous Oblast of the Komi (Syrian) formed in 1921 and existed from 1936 to 1991. The capital was Syktywkar . The Komi are a Finno-Ugric people, they make up about a third of the area's population. The region in northwestern Russia west of the Urals is 415,900 square kilometers and is now inhabited by about 1.5 million people. Three quarters of the country are forest-covered, large areas are swampy. Large quantities of crude oil and natural gas are produced in the Vorkuta extraction center near Ukhta . After the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of 1991, the region retained its status and has since been a subject of the Federation of Russia as the Komi Republic .
