Aaro Vainio (born October 2, 1993 in Espoo ) is a Finnish automobile racing driver . He competed in the GP3 series from 2011 to 2013 .

Career

Vainio began his motorsport career in karting in 1998 and remained active in this sport until 2009. He won several kart championship titles, including the Finnish Junior ICA Kart Championship in 2007 , the CIK-FIA-KF3 European Championship in 2008 and the CIK-FIA-KF1 European Championship in 2009 . He was also runner-up in the 2009 CIK-FIA karting world championship .

In 2010 Vainio switched to formula racing and competed for Tech 1 Racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . In a total of seven races he was awarded a podium finish. However, he was denied a victory. At the end of the season he finished one position behind his teammate Arthur Pic in fourth place in the drivers' championship. He was also the best-placed newcomer. He also took part in two British Formula Renault races and was 28th in the overall standings. In 2011 , Vainio started for Tech 1 Racing in the GP3 series . With a third place as the best result, he was 15th in the overall ranking. In 2012 he switched to Lotus GP and contested his second GP3 season. Vainio won the main race in Monaco and finished the season in fourth place in the drivers' championship. He was thus defeated within the team by Daniel Abt , who was second overall. Following the GP3 season, Vainio received a cockpit for Team RFR in the 2012 season of the Formula Renault 3.5 . He contested three race weekends and achieved a podium finish with a third place. In the overall standings, he was 18th. 2013 Vainio completed his third season in the GP3 series for Koiranen GP , who had entered the series this season. At the season opener on the Circuit de Catalunya he won the sprint race and the main race on the Hungaroring . Nevertheless, he was defeated within the team to Kevin Korjus , who had remained without a win. Vainio was no longer used at the last race weekend and ended the season in ninth place overall.
