But, Herr Doktor ... (Original title: Doctor in the House ) is the first film in the series of doctor films . Like its successors, it was based on a bestseller of the same title by Richard Gordon .

The focus of the film is the young medical student Herbert Sperling, who is studying medicine at St. Swithins Teaching Hospital with the three other students Grimsdyke, Benskin (both have failed their exams several times) and Taffy . The hospital is run by Sir Lancelot Sprat, a stern, grumpy and slightly quick-tempered (but also fair) man. Although Sperling and his comrades (one more, the other less) try hard, they often clash with each other. There are also love affairs, which also distract Sperling from studying . But, Herr Doktor… was the most successful British film in 1954. Due to its great success, six sequels followed.

Director Ralph Thomas worked closely with his brother, then film editor Gerald Thomas , who oversaw the editing here . Five years later, Gerald was to initiate an even longer-lasting and more successful comedy series with the Carry-on… film series .

As was so often the case in the 1950s, the names of the protagonists were changed in the German dubbing . The main character is called Simon Sparrow in the original , Herbert Sperling in the German version , and Joy is called Jenny .
