After completing his studies, he went on a gentlemanly journey in 1747, which took him through Germany and the Netherlands.

He then completed his habilitation at the Jena University of Applied Sciences, became a lawyer in Jena and gave lectures as a private lecturer. In 1756 he went to Coburg as a government and consistorial advisor to Duke Franz Josias of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld . After his brother died in Jena, he took over his professorship of Pandekten at the Jenaer Salana in 1763 and was associated with the assessor of the Faculty of Law and the Schöppenstuhl there and Councilor of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. In this capacity he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the alma mater in the summer semester of 1765 . In 1766 he moved to Weimar as a secret assistant to the secret council. In 1776 he became president of the government council in Weimar, chancellor and real privy councilor of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach .

Schmid married on October 3, 1756 in Jena with Karoline Friederike Marie Heimburg (* December 8, 1740 in Jena; † March 3, 1767 ibid.), Daughter of the Hofrat and Professor Johann Caspar Heimburg . His second marriage was in Weimar in 1772 with Bernhardine Kirms (* 1743 in Weimar; † 1810 ibid.), Daughter of the council and chamber secretary in Weimar Joachim Caspar Kirms (Kirmß) (* 1698 in Weimar; † 1770 ibid.)
