Adolf Goppel , from 1858 von Goppel (born January 2, 1800 in Heilbronn ; † October 12, 1875 there ), was a Württemberg politician and finance minister.

Life and politics

After attending grammar school in Stuttgart and Heilbronn, Adolf Goppel traveled through Germany, Holland, Belgium and northern France from 1819 to 1822. From 1824 he and his brother ran his father's grocery store in Heilbronn. From 1832 he was a member of the local council with interruptions. In 1838 he joined the committee of the Württemberg railway company for the construction of a private share railway. From 1838 to 1848 Goppel held a mandate as a member of the Good City of Heilbronn in the Chamber of Deputies of the Württemberg Land estates . In the state parliament, Goppel could be counted among the group of moderate liberals. He had known Carl Georg Wächter , Robert and Julius Mohl and Paul Pfizer since his high school days in Stuttgart . On October 10, 1847, he took part in the Heppenheim conference to discuss the German question . From March 9, 1848 to October 28, 1849, Goppel was head of the Finance Department with the title of State Councilor and thus in the function of Minister of Finance in the Württemberg March Ministry . In 1850 Goppel was a member of the second state assembly that advised the constitution as an elected member of the Ludwigsburg Oberamt . From 1851 to 1856 he was a member of the state parliament for the voters in the upper office of Urach . From 1855 to 1859 he was a member of the Heilbronn Chamber of Commerce , and since 1856 as its board member. In 1863 Goppel moved (in a replacement election for the resigned Karl David Metz ) again for the city of Heilbronn in the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament, but resigned his mandate in 1865.

After the German War in 1866, he joined the German Party , which advocated the annexation of Württemberg to a small German Empire under the leadership of Prussia. After the establishment of this empire by Bismarck, Goppel was a member of the first Reichstag from 1871 to 1874. He won his Reichstag mandate in the Württemberg 3 constituency ( Heilbronn , Besigheim , Brackenheim , Neckarsulm ). From 1871 to 1875 Goppel was also a member of the Württemberg State Court . Goppel was involved in various trade organizations and associations at the state and federal level.

The Villa Goppel at Fleiner Straße 1 in Heilbronn was a focal point of the city's cultural life. Goppel bequeathed part of his fortune to the State Councilor von Goppel'schen Foundation for educational purposes , on whose initiative the Heilbronn City Library can be traced back.

Adolf von Goppel's father Georg Goppel († 1831) was an independent businessman and ran the colonial goods store JG Goppel in Heilbronn, which was founded by Johann Gottfried Goppel from Crailsheim in the mid-18th century . His wife's name was Friederike nee Müller and, in addition to Adolf, had a son Heinrich († 1850). One of Adolf von Goppel's uncle, Karl August von Bühler (* 1765, † 1848), was the Württemberg government president , state councilor and honorary member of the secret council . Adolf von Goppel married Caroline Heermann in 1823. The marriage remained childless. They adopted the two children of Friedrich Heermann, Caroline's brother and widower, as foster parents. Emma Heermann, Friedrich's daughter, later married Adolf Otto and lived with him in the Villa Goppel on Wilhelmstrasse. 7th
