Adolf Vögtlin

Adolf Vögtlin (born February 25, 1861 in Brugg , canton Aargau ; † April 7, 1947 in Bern , canton Bern ) was a Swiss high school teacher , writer and poet .

life and work

Adolf Vögtlin, born in 1861 in the city of Brugg in the Swiss canton of Aargau, the son of a baker, trained as a silk dyer before in Geneva , Basel and Strasbourg the subjects Romance , German and art history and philosophy studied. After an 18-month study visit to England , he made his doctorate in philosophy in Strasbourg in 1886. He later worked as a teacher at schools in Basel, Küssnacht and Zurich, among others . In addition to his later professional activities, he began a career as a writer in the late 1890s.

In 1901 Rudolf Löw painted a portrait of Vögtlin. Since 1897 several stories by Adolf Vögtlin have been published by various publishers in Germany and Switzerland. In 1914, in addition to writing short stories, he also began publishing dramas . His first novel , Manesse, followed in 1924 . As another literary work has appeared in the following years novels like Simujah, the king woman , The executioner of Eger or Vittanova in 1930. The Rascher Verlag in Zurich published in 1934 with the band Collected Poems his lyrical work. In 1942 his last novel Heinrich Manesse's Adventures and Fates was published by the Berner Scherz-Verlag .

During his school days in Aarau , Vögtlin made various friendships, including with the poets Frank Wedekind , Johann Oskar Schibler and Walter Laué. In 1879 they jointly founded the Senatus Poeticus poets' association . Influenced by the works of Gottfried Keller , whom he knew personally, he published his anecdotes in 1914 at the Schuster & Loeffler publishing house in Berlin .

Adolf Vögtlin died in April 1947 at the age of 86 in Bern , where he had lived since 1936.
